Primal Endurance: Carbohydrate + Electrolyte Fuel for Longer Training

in Nutrition & Fuel, Performance & Recovery, Uncategorized

When training gets longer or more demanding, electrolytes aren’t always enough—you also need fuel. That’s why RF Supplements created Primal Endurance, a carbohydrate + electrolyte drink designed to support fueling and hydration during endurance training, high-intensity workouts, and prolonged exercise.

Whether you’re running, cycling, training for HYROX, doing CrossFit, or spending 90+ minutes in the gym, understanding the difference between hydration and fueling can help you build a better sports nutrition strategy and choose what your body needs based on the demands of your training.

Why Do Athletes Need Carbohydrates During Exercise?

Carbohydrates are an important source of energy during exercise, particularly as intensity increases. Your body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose, which can be used for energy or stored primarily in your muscles and liver as glycogen. During training, your body draws on these energy stores to help fuel working muscles. As workouts become longer and more demanding, consuming carbohydrates during exercise can become an important part of your overall fueling strategy.

For many athletes, the question during a long workout shouldn’t simply be, “Am I hydrated?” It’s also important to ask, “Am I fueled?” Hydration and fueling are both important, but they aren’t the same thing.

Why Sodium and Electrolytes Matter During Longer Training

When you sweat, you lose both water and electrolytes, with sodium being the primary electrolyte lost through sweat. Sodium plays an important role in fluid balance, which is why replacing sodium can become increasingly important during longer workouts, heavy sweating, and training in hot conditions.

Each 2-scoop serving of Primal Endurance provides 500 mg of sodium, along with 175 mg of potassium and 50 mg of magnesium. This electrolyte profile was designed to complement the fluid you’re consuming throughout training and help replace electrolytes lost through sweat.

But hydration is only part of the equation. Electrolytes don’t provide carbohydrate fuel. As workouts get longer or more demanding, your body is also relying on carbohydrates as an important energy source for working muscles.

That’s why Primal Endurance brings the two together. Each serving provides 46.3 grams of carbohydrates and 500 mg of sodium, giving athletes a convenient way to incorporate both carbohydrate fuel and electrolytes into their intra-workout nutrition.

For shorter workouts, water or a traditional electrolyte drink may be enough. But during a long run, bike ride, HYROX event, extended gym session, or other prolonged training, you may need to think about both what you’re losing through sweat and how you’re fueling the work.

When Should You Use an Intra-Workout Carb Drink?

Not every workout requires carbohydrates during exercise. For shorter training sessions, especially when you’ve eaten adequately beforehand, your existing energy stores may be sufficient. As training extends beyond approximately an hour, however, intra-workout carbohydrates become increasingly worth considering, particularly when the session is long or intense.

This doesn’t only apply to traditional endurance athletes. Runners, marathoners, cyclists, triathletes, HYROX competitors, CrossFit athletes, bodybuilders, high-volume strength athletes, and athletes completing long practices or multiple training sessions in a day may all have workouts where additional carbohydrate fuel makes sense.

You don’t necessarily have to consider yourself an “endurance athlete” to use an endurance fueling strategy. The duration and intensity of your workout can matter more than the sport you do.

How Many Carbohydrates Do You Need During Exercise?

There isn’t one carbohydrate target that’s right for every athlete. For many prolonged exercise sessions lasting approximately 1–2.5 hours, 30–60 grams of carbohydrates per hour is a commonly used sports nutrition guideline. Longer endurance events may require a different fueling strategy depending on the athlete, duration, intensity, and activity.

Your individual carbohydrate needs can also depend on your body size, what you ate before training, other carbohydrate sources you’re consuming, environmental conditions, and your digestive tolerance. More isn’t automatically better. The goal is to develop an intra-workout fueling strategy that provides enough carbohydrate for the demands of your training while still being comfortable for your digestive system.

Most importantly, don’t wait until race day or competition day to figure out what works. Practice your fueling strategy during training so you can learn how your body responds.

    Introducing Primal Endurance

Primal Endurance was created specifically for workouts where hydration alone may not be enough. By combining carbohydrates + electrolytes, Primal Endurance helps athletes incorporate both fuel and hydration support into their training nutrition without needing separate drinks.

Each 2-scoop serving delivers 46.3 grams of carbohydrates, 500 mg of sodium, 175 mg of potassium, and 50 mg of magnesium. It’s designed for long runs, rides, races, competitions, high-volume gym sessions, and other demanding workouts where maintaining both hydration and carbohydrate intake becomes increasingly important.

Simply put, Primal Endurance was created around two things your body may need more of as training gets longer: fuel + hydration.

    How to Use Primal Endurance

Mix 2 scoops of Primal Endurance with 20–24 oz of water for each hour of exercise and sip consistently throughout your workout. From there, your serving can be adjusted based on exercise duration, intensity, and your personal fueling and hydration requirements.

A 60-minute workout won’t necessarily require the same approach as a three-hour bike ride or marathon training run. Pay attention to your energy, hydration, and digestion throughout longer sessions. If you consistently notice your energy dropping toward the end of your workouts, your total carbohydrate intake may be one part of your nutrition strategy worth evaluating.

If you’re preparing for a race or competition, use your training sessions as an opportunity to test your fueling strategy ahead of time.

Primal Endurance vs. Electrolytes: Which Do You Need?

The answer depends on the workout. For shorter sessions or workouts where additional carbohydrate fuel isn’t necessary, a traditional electrolyte drink may be all you need. For longer or more demanding sessions where you want carbohydrates and electrolytes together, Primal Endurance provides a simple way to incorporate both into your training.

Think of it this way: water provides fluid, electrolytes support hydration, and carbohydrates provide fuel. Your training determines which combination you need.

Ultimately, sports nutrition isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some workouts may only require water. Others may call for additional electrolytes. And when training becomes longer or more demanding, you may need to start thinking about fuel + hydration.

Primal Endurance was created for those longer, harder sessions, giving athletes a convenient carbohydrate + electrolyte drink to incorporate into their endurance fueling strategy.

Fuel longer. Hydrate smarter. Keep going.
